I-88 Reconstruction, Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway
DuPage County, IL
Chastain provided Phase III construction engineering services for a three year contract for the Tollway. The project involved three separate, but inter-related construction projects under this contract.
The main contract consisted of reconstruction and widening a two mile section of mainline roadway on I-88 between IL Rte. 83 and York Road. Work included the realignment of the northbound I-294 to westbound I-88 ramp via a new 936 foot long two-lane curved fly-over bridge; realignment of the Harger Road entrance ramp requiring over 100 feet of new retaining wall as well as a new PPC bulb T-beam bridge over Salt Creek; reconstruction of the Spring Road ramps; and reconstruction of the IL Rte. 83 ramps.
The second project involved the reconstruction and widening of IDOT's 22nd Street roadway under I-88 in Oak Brook from McDonald's Drive to Salt Creek. Work included widening the roadway to three lanes in both directions; super structure replacement on the 22nd Street Bridge over Salt Creek; bike trail construction with parapet walls and bike railings; and extensive relocations of utilities via open trench and directional boring, including watermain, sewer, electric, natural gas, and fiber optics. Architectural elements such as ornamental festoon lighting and decorative finishes were also components of this project in this heavily travelled high profile area.
The third project consisted of the construction of a new sound barrier wall along approximately five miles of the south right of way of the I-88 corridor from IL Rte. 83 in Oak Brook to Finley Road in Downers Grove. The wall construction was soldier pile and architectural precast concrete panel.
Additional details of the project:
- In the final evaluation from ISTHA they noted “... the CM worked very hard to resolve potential problematic issues before they became critical and was a big part of this complicated project finishing successfully and ahead of schedule.”, and HLC staff “...consistently outperformed expectations and helped ensure the successful completion of a difficult project.”
- The project was awarded the 2010 ACEC-IL Special Achievement Award for special recognition of the team's engineering efforts and the client for achieving engineering excellence.
- All three projects were completed in 2010 for a construction cost of $76 million.
