Veterans Memorial Bridge 1

Design and construction services for the former Broadway Avenue Bridge over the CN Railroad were completed for a 3-span, pre-stressed concrete superstructure, with cast-in-place piers, retained earth abutments, concrete caissons, 103.5-foot back-to-back abutments, 20 degree left skew, and 100-foot out-to-out width. The width of the structure through lanes is 24 feet each. Now renamed Veterans Memorial Bridge, the structure is adjacent to the original Illinois Central Depot, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Maintaining the authentic period ambience of the original structure, the new bridge also has 25’-wide sidewalks and period lighting.

The profile now provides the required 23 feet minimum clearance over the CN Railroad, which is one foot higher than the old profile. The design was accomplished using a non-standard, solid 14” composite pre-stressed deck beam that allowed additional clearance over the tracks.

  • $1.5 million construction cost
